AI Agent Labs

Twelve labs that build one agent from scratch: an on-call assistant that investigates a failing service and writes a triage report. Each lab adds one piece, and you run every piece yourself.

AI Agents explains what an agent is. These labs show what one looks like in code, where it breaks, and how to make it safe enough to point at real systems. You write the core loop by hand first, then use MCP, A2A, LangChain, and LiteLLM.

What You'll Build

Part 1: The Agent

Lab You build You learn
1. Your first agent loop A 60-line agent with two tools The request, tool call, tool result loop that every framework hides
2. Tools and guardrails Safe tools and a loop with limits Path checks, error results, output caps, budgets, human approval
3. Tokens, context, temperature, and memory Token counts, a sampling demo, a memory file What fills the context window, why temperature now fails on Claude, short-term vs long-term memory

Part 2: Protocols and Clients

Lab You build You learn
4. Build an MCP server The lab tools as an MCP server How to share tools with Claude Code or any MCP client
5. Build a chat client with MCP Your own terminal chat app How an MCP host connects servers, routes tool calls, and keeps a conversation

Part 3: Production Habits

Lab You build You learn
6. Incident triage agent An agent that returns a structured report Structured final answers, least privilege, task prompts that rule things out
7. Evaluate your agent A test harness with graded runs Pass rates over repeated trials, deterministic checks, cost per run
8. Prompt injection An attack through a log line, then the defenses Why tool output is untrusted input, and which defenses actually hold

Part 4: Many Agents and Frameworks

Lab You build You learn
9. Multi-agent systems Specialist agents with a lead Fan-out in code vs a coordinator agent, and what each costs
10. A2A protocol The triage agent as a network service Agent cards, tasks, artifacts, and calling another team's agent
11. LangChain The same agent in LangChain 1.x create_agent, middleware for limits and approval
12. LiteLLM The same loop on any provider OpenAI-style tool calls, cost tracking, what a common interface loses

The Scenario

The labs run against an incident workspace: a folder with an alert, an application log, a config file, a deploy history, and a metrics snapshot. A script generates it, so every reader gets the same incident and the labs work without access to a real cluster.

The incident: the checkout service started returning 503 errors at 14:04. The evidence points to one root cause, and a plausible red herring sits right next to it. A good agent finds the first and rules out the second.

Why a folder and not a live cluster

An agent is only as good as the evidence it can reach. A fixed workspace makes runs comparable, which you need in Lab 7 to measure the agent. Once the loop works, you swap the file tools for kubectl, Prometheus, or your log store, and the loop stays the same.

Set Up the Lab

You need Python 3.10 or later and an Anthropic API key. Save this as requirements.txt:

requirements.txt
anthropic>=2.3,<3
mcp>=2.3,<3
a2a-sdk[http-server]>=1.3,<2
uvicorn
langchain>=1.4,<2
langchain-anthropic>=1.7,<2
litellm>=1.106
mkdir agent-lab && cd agent-lab
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
pip install -r requirements.txt
export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="sk-ant-..."   # from console.anthropic.com

The labs were tested with anthropic 2.3.0, mcp 2.3.0, a2a-sdk 1.3.0, langchain 1.4.7, langchain-anthropic 1.7.7, and litellm 1.106.6. All four libraries had breaking major releases in 2026, so code written for mcp 1.x (FastMCP), a2a-sdk 0.3, or LangChain 0.x won't run here. Labs 1 to 3 and 6 to 9 only need anthropic.

Save this script as make_workspace.py. It writes the incident workspace into ./incident.

make_workspace.py
"""Create a fake incident workspace for the agent labs.

    python make_workspace.py                      # db-pool scenario in ./incident
    python make_workspace.py --scenario disk-full
    python make_workspace.py --inject # adds an untrusted log line

    build(Path(args.out), args.scenario, args.inject)
    print(f"wrote {args.out}/ ({args.scenario}{', injected' if args.inject else ''})")

Run it and look at what the agent will see:

$ python make_workspace.py
wrote incident/ (db-pool)

$ find incident -type f | sort
incident/ALERT.txt
incident/config/checkout.env
incident/deploys.json
incident/logs/checkout.log
incident/metrics.json

Read logs/checkout.log yourself before Lab 1. Find the root cause by hand first, so you can judge whether the agent got it right.

Cost and Models

The labs use claude-opus-5-5. One investigation takes 4 to 10 model calls, and each call resends the conversation so far. Expect a few cents to a few tens of cents per run. The eval in Lab 7 runs the agent 9 times by default, and the multi-agent lab runs four agents per investigation.

To iterate cheaply, set AGENT_MODEL=claude-haiku-5-5 while you build, then run the final eval on the model you plan to use. Lab 7 shows why that last step matters: a pass rate measured on one model says little about another.

Rules for every lab

  • Point the tools at the lab workspace, never at your home directory or a production system.
  • Keep restart_service simulated. It writes to actions.log and touches nothing else.
  • Never put real credentials, customer data, or internal logs in the workspace. Everything in it goes to the model API.
  • Bind the MCP and A2A servers to 127.0.0.1, as the labs do. They have no authentication.
