Monoliths and Microservices

A monolith may combine web UI, authentication, orders, payments, and database integration into one deployment. Splitting it can create frontend, auth, order, payment, and database services that scale and deploy independently.

Containers make packaging those services repeatable, but they do not solve distributed failure, service discovery, observability, data consistency, authorization, release coordination, or operational complexity. Start with boundaries justified by team and product needs; do not adopt microservices merely because containers are available.
